Bedsores, hospital fall expedited patient's death, lawsuit alleges

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A patient's death was hastened by severe bedsores and injuries suffered in a fall at Staten Island University Hospital when staff was cleaning her, a lawsuit alleges.

Jillian Butler's civil complaint accuses the hospital of negligence for failing to prevent her mother, Lucille Butler, from developing the most serious type of bedsores, and for allowing her to crash to the floor from her hospital bed 10 days before she died on Aug. 23, 2016.

Lucille Butler, 61, suffered fractured shoulders and other injuries in the Aug. 13 incident, which, along with the bedsores, caused or contributed to her "wrongful, premature and untimely death," said the complaint.
