The Construction Industry's "Fatal Four"

Most people are well aware that the construction industry is an important yet highly dangerous field. Still, some Americans who enjoy the fruits of a construction worker’s labor may not necessarily realize just how dangerous their job really is. One look at a few statistics and it’s clear that construction workers face serious hazards on the job - and lots of them. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), construction workers are injured and killed on the job at alarming rates. In fact, out of the 3,929 reported private industry worker deaths in 2013, roughly 20% involved workers in the construction industry. Put in other terms - one in five worker deaths in 2013 were in construction. OSHA went further in analyzing construction industry deaths and found that many were caused by the same few hazards. They dubbed the four most common causes of construction industry deaths the “Fatal Four." OSHA’s “Fatal Four" include:

  • Falls
  • Struck by object
  • Electrocutions
  • Caught-in / between

According to OSHA, these four types of construction accidents caused more than half of all construction worker fatalities in 2013. Additionally, eliminating the “Fatal Four" would save around 468 construction workers’ lives a year.
