New York City Injury Lawyer / FAQs / How Do I Find the Right Attorney?

How do I find the right attorney?

After a person is injured in an accident and they think they may have a personal injury case the next question they have is: How do I find the right personal injury attorney to help me with my claim to obtain the compensation they I am entitled to?

If you need a personal injury lawyer you should not just hire any lawyer – you need to look for someone who has experience in handling personal injury claims and whom you feel you can rely on and trust.

Personal injury cases require experience and commitment by the attorneys you hire. If you have been seriously injured due to someone else’s negligence you need to hire a law firm with the ability, staff and financial resources to handle serious cases as well as a track record of being successful.

There are several ways to find experienced personal injury lawyers. The hiring of an attorney is an important decision and should not be based solely upon a Google, newspaper, TV or radio advertisement-or even a large billboard.

You may talk to friends or co-workers who have been represented by a lawyer in their own personal injury claims or, you may seek a referral through other lawyers you know. But even if your friend or coworker says good things to you about a lawyer, or another lawyer gives you the name of a personal injury lawyer, that lawyer may still not be the right lawyer for you and your case.

Since most personal injury attorneys will charge the same contingency fee basis, which means that the lawyer will only get a fee if you are successful at the end of your case, and will also not charge you for the initial consultation to meet with the lawyer, you need to choose the lawyer that you feel is right for you and your case.

Most people are not aware of the fact that it can cost a lot of money to successfully bring a serious personal injury lawsuit. To win your personal injury case often requires the help of many “experts”, including: liability experts to explain why the other side is at fault for your injury; medical experts to explain your injury and what the future holds for you; rehabilitation experts to explain the projected costs of your future care; and economists to compute the projected costs of your future and past damages, medical and rehabilitation costs and to also compute your lost past and future wages.

Once a lawyer agrees to take on your case it is the lawyer who has to spend the money necessary to be successful by doing the proper investigation and hiring the right experts. So you need to ask: is the lawyer successful? Has the lawyer any experience in handling serious cases that require spending large sums to be successful? Does the lawyer have a successful track record and experience and has this firm obtained substantial settlements and verdicts for its clients?

You need to hire a lawyer that will spend the time and money that you and your case deserve and that has the track record and experience your case requires. You can’t just call any lawyer that advertises or that you see on the internet–you need to ask some basic questions and do some research before you hire a lawyer for your case.

You need to know about the lawyer’s experience-has the lawyer handled cases similar to yours? Has the lawyer been successful in obtaining verdicts and settlements in similar cases? How long has the lawyer been in practice? Does the lawyer specialize in personal injury cases? Does the lawyer most often represent the plaintiff, the person who was injured? You do not want to be represented by someone who has little experience with personal injury cases or who has primarily been a lawyer for the defendant, the entity or person being sued.
